GSC men's and women's soccer finals set for Sunday

Pensacola, Fla. – West Alabama and West Florida advanced to the men’s Gulf South Conference Final, while West Florida and Christian Brothers advanced to the women’s championship on Sunday at Brosnaham Park.
The first semifinal matchup of the day saw No. 3 West Alabama take on No. 2 Alabama Huntsville.
Vitor Gazza started the scoring for West Alabama in the 42
nd minute when he stole the ball resulting in a one-on-one break with the keeper. He then added another goal in the 57
th minute when he netted a rebounded shot.
That is all UWA would need to advance to the championship game on Sunday.
The second men’s semifinal featured both No. 4 Christian Brothers and No. 1 West Florida.
After a scoreless first half, the first goal of the match came courtesy of Jack Salafrio when he finished on a breakaway effort to put UWF up, 1-0, in the 81
st minute of the second half. Dillon Gallet added another score in the 82
nd minute to increase the UWF’s lead, 2-0.
The final score registered 2-0, in favor of West Florida, as it advanced to the final on Sunday.
The first women’s game of the day saw No. 4 West Alabama battle top-seeded West Florida.
Chelsea Palmer headed in the first score of the match in the 4
th minute to give UWF the early lead. Kelly Andres added yet another goal in the 27
th minute to increase the UWF lead, 2-0. April Syme scored in the 42
nd minute of the first half, while Shelby Bush headed in another score in the 44
th minute to give UWF a 4-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Nicki Gears put UWA on the board in the 79
th minute and, moments later, Gears added another score, her second of the match, to decrease UWF’s lead, 2-4. In the end, UWF was too much, and won the game by the score of, 4-2.
The final semifinal match of the night saw No. 6 Alabama Huntsville against No. 2 Christian Brothers.
Christian Brothers struck first when Carmen Manes scored in the 4
th minute. In the second half, Alex Bickenbach added to that lead, making it 2-0, in the 56
th minute.
Sydnie Fiocca cut into the deficit for UAH with a goal in the 70
th minute, but just moments later, Bickenbach scored her second goal of the night to increase CBU’s lead, 3-1, and secure the win.
Championship Sunday will see the women kick things off as Christian Brothers will battle West Florida at 11 a.m. (CT). The men’s final will see West Alabama against West Florida at 1:30 p.m. at Brosnaham Park.
