Valdosta State Wins First National Softball Championship in School, GSC History
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- After three consecutive second place finishes for the Gulf South Conference and an early loss in this year's NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament, 2012 did not seem like the year that Valdosta State, and the GSC, would bring home its first national title.
But the Blazers capped a fairy tale season with a 4-1 win over defending national champion UC-San Diego to win the 2012 National Championship. Senior pitcher Alanna Hadley allowed just three hits and struck out five in grabbing the complete-game victory and big hits by GSC Player and Freshman of the Year Courtney Albritton - who led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run - and a two-run single by Clare Wamsley in the sixth inning that gave VSU breathing room provided the difference.
Samantha Posey made the final out by stepping on third base to get a force out and bring home the title.
