2012 All-GSC Men's Golf Team Released
Complete Release
Birmingham, AL—The Gulf South Conference is proud to announce the 2012 All-GSC Men’s Golf Team as selected the league’s coaches.
GSC Champion North Alabama and Tournament runner-up West Florida each recorded three players on the squad, while Valdosta State added the remaining member.
GSC INDIVIDUAL AWARDS
West Florida provided the GSC Player of the Year for the second straight season when senior Carlos Rodriguez collected this year’s honor. Rodriguez posted one of the top seasons in school history, tallying three tournament victories, tying a UWF record. The Cali, Colombia native currently leads all Division II with a 70.85 scoring average in 27.0 rounds played. Rodriguez posted a fourth-place finish at last week’s GSC Tournament, which secured second consecutive All-Tournament spot.
UWF completed a sweep of the individual student-athlete awards, claiming the GSC Freshman of the Year. Juan Miguel Heredia became the fifth Argonaut in six years to collect the accolade after the Cuenca, Ecuador native joined the team after the semester break. Heredia competed in four tournaments, averaging a score of 73.25 and 1.75 over par led by a Top 10 finish at the Argonaut Invitational
North Alabama head coach Stuart Clark claimed the GSC Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons after guiding the Lions to their third GSC Title in four years. Three of Clark’s golfers posted GSC All-Tournament scores in this year’s event. UNA enters the NCAA post-season ranked No. 4 in the Golf World/Nike Top 25 poll.
ALL-GSC TEAM
The 2012 All-GSC Team is headlined by just the third four-time All-GSC First Team honoree in league history, West Florida senior Ryan Black. Blake follows Troy State’s Ben Bates who took home All-GSC laurels from 1980-81 and 1983-84 and Arkansas Tech’s Jared Carlyle who won from 2006-09.
North Alabama senior Jake Greer makes the All-GSC First Team for the third consecutive season after posting accolades the past two seasons. In fact, Greer boasts post-season honors for the fourth year in a row after making the Second Team in 2009.
Returning from last year’s First Team are UWF senior Carlos Rodriguez and UNA senior Tyler Chandler. Chandler and Valdosta State’s Nate Anderson finished the 54-hole GSC Tournament tied for first place, but Anderson claimed the Individual Medalist honor in the first sudden-death playoff hole.
Rounding out the All-GSC Team are first-time members, North Alabama junior Ricky Stimets and West Florida senior Thomas Guste-Pedersen.
