GSC Baseball Players of the Week, April 12
EAST DIVISION
West Florida starting pitcher Ben Hawkins (JR, 6-0, 180, Rome, GA).
Hawkins collects his second award of the season and is UWF’s sixth pitching honoree of 2011. The junior turned in a dominate performance in a 2-0 shutout of West Alabama, recording just the second no-hitter in UWF’s Division II history. The Rome, GA native pitched all seven innings, striking out 12 Tigers and walking just two batters.
Valdosta State outfielder John Willner (SR, 6-2, 180, Regina, Saskatchewan).
Willner records his second accolade in three weeks after hitting safely in all four of VSU’s games last week. The senior was 8-for-15 for a .533 average while also slugging for a 1.400 percentage. He helped the Blazers earn a 2-1 series win over Alabama-Huntsville thanks to a pair of two homerun games. The Regina, Saskatchewan native went 4-for-5 with five RBI, one double and two homers in a 9-4 win Game Two. He capped the series with two solo round-trippers in the 16-12 rubber match.
WEST DIVISION
Ouachita Baptist starting pitcher Kolby Moore (SR, 6-2, 200, Indianola, IA).
Moore is OBU’s second consecutive pitching honoree. The Tigers took two-of-three from Delta State this past weekend, icing the series in Game Two behind the senior’s effort on the mound. Moore pitched all seven innings versus DSU, claiming the complete-game victory while scattering six hits and striking out six Statesmen. The Indianola, IA native gave up just one earned run and shut the door in the final frame when he struck out the final out with runners in scoring position.
Arkansas Tech outfielder Colt Loehrs (SR, 6-2, 201, Arkansas City, KS).
Loehrs earns his second honor of the season after notching at least two hits in all four of the Wonder Boys’ games last week. The senior went 9-for-16 for a .562 average along with a .938 slugging percentage and a .611 on-base mark. The Arkansas City, KS native began the week with a 3-for-5 effort versus Ouachita Baptist, which included one homerun and one double. Next, he led ATU to a three-game sweep versus Christian Brothers, capped by a four-RBI outing in the final game of the series.
