2011 All-GSC Volleyball Team Announced
Birmingham, Ala.—The 2011 Gulf South Conference volleyball regular season has concluded and the best players in the conference have been chosen for this year’s All-GSC teams.
Players were selected for the First or Second Team by vote of the league coaches. In all, 19 players were picked with GSC champion West Florida and runner-up North Alabama leading the way with five honorees. Christian Brothers and Valdosta State each had three selections, West Alabama added two and Alabama-Huntsville had one honoree.
Eight players were previous members of the All-GSC team. Juniors led the way with nine selections (four on the First Team), seniors and sophomores followed with four each and there were two freshman selections.
Below are the winners of the individual honors, including Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and Coach of the Year.
UWF’S HOMME WINS PLAYER OF THE YEAR
West Florida middle hitter Lindsey Homme earned the GSC Player of the Year award. She is just the third player in school history selected as the top player and the second consecutive Argonaut to bring home the honor. She was a three-time Offensive Player of the Week and helped the Argonauts to the regular season title and top seed in the GSC Tournament. Homme leads GSC in hitting percentage (.324), is second in kills per set (3.62) and fourth in blocks per set (0.87). She also has 82 digs and 23 service aces this season.
VSU’S LALA EARNS FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Valdosta State setter Ashley Lala was named GSC Freshman of the Year. Lala paced the Lady Blazers’ offense, with her 9.69 assists per game ranking third in the GSC. The rookie also has 89 kills, 353 digs, 25 service aces and 30 blocks on the season. She currently has 13 double-doubles and has recorded at least 40 assists 13 times, including a season-high 57 against USC-Aiken on Sept. 16.
UWF’S WOLTER EARNS COACH OF THE YEAR
West Florida head coach Melissa Wolter was named winner of the Coach of the Year Award. It is her second consecutive award and third overall after also winning this award in 2007. Wolter, who won her 200th match at UWF this season, led the Argonauts to a fifth consecutive title, posting a 23-8 regular season record, 14-0 in conference play. The team is currently on its second-longest winning streak of the season (eight games) and set the GSC record for most consecutive home wins with 37.
