GSC Announces 2011 All-Conference Football Team
Complete Release (PDF)
Birmingham, AL—The Gulf South Conference announced the 41st edition of its All-Conference Football Teams today.
GSC Champion Delta State led the way on this year’s squad, landing 19 total players led by 11 First Team members.
West Alabama followed with 13 overall honorees and eight First Team standouts. North Alabama was third overall, placing 12 led by five First Teamers, followed by Valdosta State’s 11 (seven First Team) and West Georgia’s seven (one First Team).
DSU’S DAVIS IS GSC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Quarterback Micah Davis became the seventh Delta State player to be named the GSC Offensive Player of the Year. The senior is the first Statesmen to take home the award since DSU signal caller Scott Eyster won back-to-back laurels in 2005 and 2006. He is also the ninth straight quarterback to take home the offensive honor.
Davis guided DSU to the 2011 Conference Title and a No. 1 seed in this year’s NCAA Super Region Two Playoff bracket. He enters the post-season ranked first in the league in total offense (296.3), passing (284.7) and passing touchdowns (tied, 19). The Wesson, MS native guided the Statesmen to a No. 1 national ranking for a four-week span and orchestrated four fourth-quarter comebacks this year.
UWA’S LACEY CHOSEN AS GSC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
West Alabama linebacker Deon Lacey was a unanimous selection for the GSC Defensive Player of the Year award. The junior became the first UWA defensive honoree since 1983 and the seventh overall winner. He is also the seventh consecutive linebacker to win the award.
Lacey led UWA in tackles (87), tackles for loss (9.0 for 49 yards) and sacks (4.0 for 34 yards), and he also finished second with two interceptions. The Brighton, AL native posted double-digit tackles in four games this season and was a two-time GSC Defensive Player of the Week.
UWA’S CALDWELL, UWG’S LAWRENCE CLAIM GSC FRESHMAN HONORS
West Alabama provided the GSC Offensive Freshman of the Year for the first time ever. Quarterback Kyle Caldwell answered the bell for UWA this season, guiding the Tigers an 8-3 mark after injuries thrust him into the starting lineup after three games. The Dadeville, AL native enters this weekend’s NCAA Playoffs ranking second in the GSC in pass efficiency (136.8), third in passing (145.7), fourth in total offense (183.2) and ninth in rushing (37.6).
Linebacker Teddy Lawrence became West Georgia’s first-ever GSC Defensive Freshman of the Year. The Rome, GA native played in all 10 games for the Wolves, ranking 10th on the team in total tackles (38) and adding 2.5 tackles for loss and one interception.
UWA’S HALL, UWG’S DICKEY SHARE GSC COACH OF THE YEAR LAURELS
For the third year in a row, the GSC recognized more than one GSC Coach of the Year as West Alabama’s Will Hall and West Georgia’s Daryl Dickey each took home their first-ever accolade. The league crowned three coaches last year and designated co-winners in 2009.
Hall set high expectations in his first season as a head coach, leading UWA to its second NCAA Playoff appearance in three seasons. The Tigers’ 8-3 record gave the Red and White three straight winning seasons for the first time since 1973-1975.
Dickey guided the Wolves to their best season since 2005, going 6-4 led by a two upsets over Top 20 teams. UWG won bragging rights against in-state rival No. 17 Valdosta State before capping the regular season by shocking No. 1 Delta State at home last weekend.
2011 ALL-GSC TEAM
The 2011 All-GSC Football Team is headlined by returning First Team members, West Alabama wide receiver Gerald Worsham and North Alabama offensive guard Kyle Thornton.
Making the jump from last year’s Second Team is UNA running back Wes Holland and center Jamie Dixon, DSU linebacker Ixavier Triplett and defensive back Dominique Davenport and UWG return specialist Denarius Appling.
The team also included 10 unanimous selections: DSU quarterback Micah Davis, UWA running back Matt Willis, Delta State wide out Chance Dennis, West Alabama wide receivers Ken May and Gerald Worsham, UNA wide out Mo Milliam, VSU offensive guard Edmund Kugbila, UWA linebacker Deon Lacey, Delta State’s Triplett and UWG’s Appling.
