Delta State Defeats Albany State in NCAA DII Football Quarterfinals
GSC Tri-Champion Champion and No. 2 seed Delta State reeled off 28 unanswered points en route to a 28-7 upset at No. 1 seed Albany State in the NCAA Super Region 2 Title game.
DSU advanced to the its first NCAA DII Semi-Final since 2006 by handing ASU its first loss of the season.
The Golden Rams thrilled their home crowd, grabbing a 7-0 lead on the game's opening possession. The Statesmen's defense set up the game-tying score, returning an interception to ASU's 23-yard line followed by wide receiver LJ Castille's 12-yard touchdown grab at 4:33 in the first frame.
The score remained tied heading into halftime, but Delta State took advantage of Albany State turnovers to reel off 21 points in the third quarter. Running back Trevar Deed ran in the go-ahead TD at 13:18 and then added a six-yard scoring catch at 5:12. Running back Brandon Lucas capped the scoring, running for a 12-yard TD at 3;31.
Next up for Delta State (10-3) is Shepherd University (11-2) which defeated Mercyhurst, 49-14, in the Super Regional 1 Title Game. Saturday's Semi-Final clash is set for 2:00 pm or 6:00 pm Eastern at a site that is to be determined. The game will be shown on CBS College Sports.
