Jones Class Induction 2014 Sport(s) Administrator Career Highlights Graduated from North Alabama in 1958 and served as an institutional member of the athletic staff from 1974-94. Coached the UNA basketball teams from 1974-1988, posting a 259-141 record over a span that included four Final Four appearances and the 1979 NCAA Division II National Championship. After serving as an assistant athletic director at UNA from 1974-77 and as an associate athletic director from 1977-87, Jones became the first full-time athletic director with no coaching responsibilities on December 22, 1987. Under Jones, UNA won five GSC Women’s All-Sports Trophies, two Men’s All-Sports Trophies, three NCAA Division II National Championships and 25 GSC Championships in nine different sports. As a coach, Jones led UNA to three GSC championships, three GSC Tournament titles and four NCAA regional crowns. Earned GSC Coach of the Year honors in 1980 and was the Kodak District Coach of the Year in 1984. He led UNA to a 165-37 home record at Flower’s Hall, good for a 81.7 winning percentage. Was inducted into the UNA Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992 and is also a member of the Lauderdale County Hall of Fame and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. Served on the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee at the time the three-point shot was established. He is the only person in the 70+ year-history of the UNA athletic program to have been a student-athlete there and later become the athletic director. In all, Jones spent 20 years as a basketball coach and athletic administrator at UNA before announcing his retirement on August 31, 1994.
