Career Highlights
  • Spent 46 years in baseball on the collegiate and professional levels, building a 639-387-8 record in 26 seasons as Head Coach of the Delta State Statesmen
  • Inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1988
  • Pitched and coached for the Boston Red Sox for 10 seasons
  • Named Rookie of the Year in 1945 and was the American League’s top pitcher in 1946, compiling a 25-6 record
  • Pitched the Red Sox to a 4-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1946 World Series
  • After his professional career ended, Ferriss served as pitching coach for the Red Sox organization.  He would accept the head coaching position at Delta State in 1960.
  • Recipient of the United States Baseball Federation Service Award for his contributions to the game.  Named NCAA Regional “Coach of the Year” three times, while also earning GSC coaching honors three times.
  • He is a 1989 inductee into the Delta State University Sports Hall of Fame and is a member of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and the Mississippi State University Sports Hall of Fame.
  • He was inducted into the Mississippi Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981 and to the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2002.
