Alabama Huntsville third baseman
Kaitlyn Bannister (Jr.; Albertville, Ala.) was named the Gulf South Conference Softball Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Bannister had a record book week for the Chargers, driving in 20 runs, including 10 in one game, and becoming only the sixth player in NCAA Division II softball history to hit two grand slams in a single game. Bannister hit .533 and scored eight runs in the three-game sweep at Union to help UAH secure the No. 4 seed in the GSC Softball Tournament. Bannister started the weekend hitting 4-for-5 with a UAH single-game record 10 RBI in Game 1 on Friday. She hit a three-run home run in the first, a two-run double in the second, another three-run dinger in the fifth and a two-run double in the fifth. She broke the UAH single-season RBI record Saturday, driving in 10 more RBI in a doubleheader. She was 1-for-4 with a run scored and RBI in the first game, but then hit two grand slams in the second game as part of a 2-for-3, nine-RBI game. She now leads DII for single-season RBIs in 2016. She also now leads the GSC in runs scored (64) and total bases (141). Her single-game and single-season RBI totals are both second in the GSC record book.
