West Florida first baseman
Kathleen Smiley (Fr.; Pensacola, Fla.) was named the Gulf South Conference Softball Freshman of the Week on Tuesday.
Smiley hit .500 with a double, two home runs, six RBIs and four walks through five games last week. She posted a .611 on-base percentage and 1.000 slugging percentage, while leading UWF with seven hits. During UWF's sweep over Mississippi College over the weekend, Smiley delivered back-to-back three-hit games and homered in each of Saturday's doubleheader games. She drove in five runs and scored three times in the series. She has reached base safely in 14 straight games and leads the Argos with a .388 batting average, 17 RBI and four home runs through 16 games played this season. UWF (12-4, 4-2 in the GSC) is in a three-way tie for fourth in the GSC and is scheduled to host Columbus State on Wednesday for its home opener. UWF will host Valdosta in a three-game set this weekend.
