Gulf South Conference Hosts Annual SAAC Meeting
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference and its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held their annual meetings this past week in Birmingham.
The festivities started off with a bonding session on Wednesday night, with the participants playing laser tag.
On Thursday morning, the group went to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The Birmingham Botanical Gardens are one of the premier botanical gardens in the country and strives to promote the public knowledge and appreciation of plants, gardens, and the environment. Students and administrators cleared brush, removed vines and roots, and installed privacy slats in a fence before receiving a guided tour.
That afternoon, participants enjoyed presentations from Neverthirst, who shared their mission and involvement with the league. Billy Ivey spoke to the group about how simple ideas and good stories can produce engagement and further your ability to influence. There were also discussions on best practices from each institution, sharing ideas on how to maximize the platform that the SAAC provides. Commissioner Matt Wilson also led an open forum, updating the group on initiatives from the conference office and answering questions about league procedures and policies.
One student-athlete from each school also filmed an interview that will be turned into a feature for the league. Those SAAC spotlights will be released throughout the year.
During the business meeting on Friday, Lee's Shonna Penney was selected as the new Vice Chair and will serve alongside Union's Kristen Pickens. Delta State's Grant Foley will serve as a national representative for the league.
