BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference has released the 2018 men’s track and field yearly awards, as voted on by the league’s coaches. Lee’s Justin Brooks and Alabama Huntsville’s Elijah Dryer receive GSC Co-Track Athlete of the Year awards. Dryer also receives the GSC Freshman of the Year award. The Chargers rack up the final awards, with Zach Hancock selected as Field Athlete of the Year and David Cain named Coach of the Year.

Brooks and Dryer are selected after impressive rankings and performances on the year. Brooks helped the Flames to a third place finish at the conference meet, taking home gold in the 400 meters and silver in the 200 meters. Dryer finished first in the 200 meters and second in the 100 meters at the GSC meet. The freshman is competitive nationally as well, ranking 15th in the 100 meters and second in the 200 meters. He holds a provisional mark in the 100m and an automatic mark in the 200m. With these marks, Dryer was also selected the GSC Freshman of the Year. He is the third highest nationally-ranked freshman in the 100m and the highest in the 200m.

He helped UAH earn a dominant victory at the 2018 GSC Championship, the second straight title for the Chargers. He took home gold in the shot put at the conference meet, throwing a meet record 17.06m. He also took first in the discus. The sophomore ranks 12th nationally in the shot put and 11th in the discus, with provisional marks in each.
