GSC Men's Track & Field Yearly Awards Announced
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The 2016 Men's Gulf South Conference Track & Field annual honors were announced on Friday.
Four awards - the Track Athlete of the Year, Field Athlete of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year - were awarded to four individuals representing three schools.
Christian Brothers University's Brian Braswell is the 2016 Track Athlete of the Year.
An All-GSC First Team athlete, the freshman from Bartlett, Tenn., won Track Performer of the Week and Freshman Performer of the Week honors during the season. At the 2016 GSC Track & Field Championships, Braswell was named Most Outstanding Overall Performer, Most Outstanding Field Performer and Most Oustanding Freshman Performer, winning the 110 meter hurdles and was a member of CBU’s third-place 4x100 meter relay team.
West Alabama’s Kendall Moore is the 2016 Field Athlete of the Year.
The sophomore, a native of Huntsville, Ala., is a two-time winner of the GSC Track Performer of the Week this season. Moore, a member of the All-GSC First Team, had two first place finishes in the high jump in competitions this season and won the event at the GSC Championships. He also placed fifth in the long jump at the conference meet.
University of West Alabama’s CJ Savage is the 2016 GSC Men’s Track & Field Freshman of the Year.
Savage was named GSC Freshman Performer of the Week once this season. The native of Piedmont, Ala., was the 100 meter dash champion at the GSC Track & Field Championship and placed third in the 200 meter dash. He also finished second in the 1600 meter run at the Jaguar Invitational 1600SMR and 3rd in the 100 meter dash at the Heart of Dixie and BSC Invites.
Lee University’s Caleb Morgan named the GSC Track & Field Coach of the Year.
Morgan, in his third year as head coach of the Flames, led Lee to three second-place team finishes in meets this season and also won the first GSC Men’s Track & Field Championship since 1986.
