Inaugural All-GSC Lacrosse Honors Announced

Birmingham, Ala.—The Gulf South Conference announced its inaugural All-Conference Lacrosse Team for the 2016 season.
               
Young Harris paced the 13-member squad with seven honorees. Alabama Huntsville and Shorter both came in second with three selections each.
 
CRYSTAL MARSHALL CROWNED GSC PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Shorter junior Crystal Marshall (Anoka, Minn.) closed the regular season with 45 goals, 9 assists and 54 points. She had 49 draw controls and 37 ground balls. She was the GSC’s leader in shots per game (7.15), while leading Shorter in goals scored per game (3.46), points per game (4.15) and draw controls per game (3.92). She ranked in the Top 3 for the GSC in each category. Her 10 goals scored in three conference games rank third in the GSC, scoring on 45.5 percent of her shots taken. The Shorter team captain was twice named the GSC Offensive Player of the Week.
 
ALEX ABBEY NAMED GSC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Shorter junior Alex Abbey (Suwanee, Ga.) led the GSC in caused turnovers (2.29) and was sixth overall in ground balls per game (2.86) and 10th in draw controls (2.21) through 15 starts for Shorter. She was a one-time GSC Defensive Player of the Week.
 
SARAH BIALECKI & NICOLE FEDEROVITCH ARE CO-FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Young Harris attacker Sarah Bialecki (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Alabama Huntsville attacker Nicole Federovitch (Barnegat, N.J.) share the inaugural Freshman of the Year honors. Bialecki led the GSC with 26 assists (1.63 per game) and scored 14 goals for a total of 40 points. She was named the GSC Freshman of the Week once.  Federovitch, a five-time GSC Freshman of the Week, started all 16 games for UAH, leading the conference with 67 goals and 77 points, including 10 assists. Her 6.69 shots per game were second in the GSC. She had a season-high nine points (six goals and three assists) on Feb. 20 against Rockhurst. Her season-high seven goals came Feb. 20 in the GSC opener at Montevallo. She finished with 10 goals against GSC teams.
 
KATIE ZIEK VOTED COACH OF THE YEAR
Young Harris head coach Katie Ziek (Limestone, 2010), in her fourth season as head coach at YHC, led the Mountain Lions to a perfect 3-0 conference record to win the inaugural Gulf South Conference regular season championship. YHC finished the regular season with the second-best overall record in the GSC at 11-5.
